This lovable little dog is among the smallest of the working terriers. It has a short, strong, sturdy body with strongly boned legs and a fox-like muzzle. The eyes are dark and expressive. The ears are upright, and the tail is docked. The medium length waterproof coat is relatively easy to care for, but daily combing and brushing is important. A little clipping is required. This breed is a light shedder.

Norwich Terriers are courageous, affectionate, balanced without any nervousness or being quarrelsome. They are easy to train. These little dogs love everyone and are good with children. They will dig and bark if left outside for long periods of time without anything to occupy their quick minds. They love toys and balls and are generally good with other pets.

The Norwich Terriers will do okay in an apartment if sufficiently exercised. They are fairly active indoors and will do okay without a yard. These little dogs were bred to work. They are energetic and thrive on an active life and interaction with their owners. Norwich adapt more easily to urban life, preferring the company of humans over other dogs. The breed is long-lived and hardy. Their life expectancy is about 12 to 15 years. This breed was officially developed in England as a small ratting dog. As they were bred to hunt in packs, the Norwich Terrier tends to be more sociable than many other terriers. Today the Norwich Terriers serves primarily as a companion dog, but can still take care of vermin.
